I'm in love with today's love story.
It's the tale of Ginger, Greg and David.
I hope you watch the video first. When you do, you'll see that Ginger and Greg came first. Sweethearts in the '80's. Greg had a catastrophic motorcycle accident that left him with a severe brain injury. Not only did Ginger refuse to leave him, she refused to put him in nursing home.
Taking care of Greg and working full-time at night, she more than had her hands full. Another relationship was the last thing she was looking for.
Yet, along came David asking her out. On their very first date, she explained her reality. "I take care of Greg and where I go, he goes."
I bet 99% of men would've run, and who could blame them. But not David. Of course I had to ask him, "Why not?"
You'll see in the video that during the interview he answered that he figured he had two young kids from a previous marriage and Ginger had Greg. In other words, they both had, "stuff."
Made sense to me, but listening to a message on my voicemail later that day, I found the answer is much deeper than that.
It was David calling to say he didn't really think he did a good job answering my question about why he didn't bolt for the door when Ginger explained her unusual circumstances. Would I mind listening while he explained further?
"I could see," David explained, "how commited Ginger was to Greg, even in the hardest of times. Any woman who could be that strong and love that big was the woman I wanted for me."
He thanked me for listening to the message and hung up.
I just had to share that because it made my day. Where so many would have seen fear and scarcity, David saw magnificence and strength. What a brilliant man.
Thanks, David, for the lesson and inspiration.
You can find David, Ginger, and Greg's story in a book called, "A Celebration of Caregiving."
